Campus safety information from Mark Green, Director, Public Safety, May 1, 2007

The Department of Public Safety has offices on the Belleville and Granite City campuses.  Public Safety Officers are on duty and patrol the Belleville and Granite City campuses 24 hours a day.  On the Red Bud Campus, Public Safety services are coordinated through the Office of the Provost or the Evening Campus Supervisor.  The Red Bud Police Department provides law enforcement services.

On the Belleville campus, three Public Safety personnel are certified police officers and qualified to carry weapons.  At Granite City, one person is a certified police officer.  However, weapons are not worn or stored on campus by Public Safety personnel.  Public safety maintains relationships with local law enforcement agencies.

The College has an emergency plan and an Emergency Planning Committee that meets once a month.  At present there is not a faculty representative on the committee.  Mark Green advised that a faculty representative on the Emergency Planning Committee would be welcome.

All classrooms and office areas should have an Emergency Response Guide posted in the room.  These guides are flip charts which detail what to do in different types of emergencies.  The guides are campus specific and have phone numbers and extensions on each page.  Additional guides are available from Public Safety.

Mark Green asked that faculty be cooperative in immediately evacuating a room when an alarm goes off or an order is given.  Accountability of students and employees is critical.  Also, please ensure all personal belongs are taken during an evacuation; based on the situation, it may be a while before re-entry is allowed.

All classroom doors should be set to automatically lock when closed.  This is a safety precaution.  However, some faculty reported that their classrooms or labs are kept unlocked.  Mark Green advised he would follow up on this.

Public Safety publishes the annual Campus Security Report.  The report provides crime statistics for the college's campuses and off-campus sites. The college also keeps an updated registered sex offender list.  The report is available online at www.swic.edu/publicsafety/csr.  There is a link to the report at the bottom of the College's internet home page.

Public Safety also generates Monthly Activity Reports from the daily logs which describe all crimes reported to the department, except when disclosure of such information is prohibited by law or such disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim.  The monthly activity logs are also available online at www.swic.edu/publicsafety/csr.
